How to prepare yourself for trekking the classic Annapurna Trail?

The first thing that you can do to keep yourself prepared for the Annapurna Classic Trek is to understand the mental and physical demands it comes with, high-altitude alpine rambling, and begin to build your strength and endurance. It is better to start a few months earlier; the more uphill and higher-altitude training, especially with a backpack of at least 5-6 kg, mimics the Annapurna Classic Trekking conditions better for the preparation for the upcoming Nepal adventure to one of the highest mountain passes in the world, Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). Side by side, it is important to keep oneself mentally prepared for the trek to pursue the classic Annapurna hiking route.

Be prepared for basic meals and accommodation, unpredictable Himalayan weather, and increased potential of acute mountain sickness. Once you are confident, book with reputable travel, trek, and expedition local organizers like Skybound Adventure. Being with local experts not only increases the success level but also helps you make the best out of the journey. As we take care of all the essential trekking logistics, including food, accommodation, permits, and guides, all you are left to do is enjoy the moment.

What should you pack for Annapurna Classic Hiking in Nepal?

Regardless of the Himalayan routes you choose, such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest Three Passes Hike, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, or Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking, high-quality gear and equipment keep you well prepared for unforeseen circumstances even while you are on the way to the Annapurna Classic Trip. You don't need to get a new one; you may choose to rent, but it is a must that you have a fitted backpack, layered clothing, footwear that fits you perfectly, and convertible trekking shirts and pants.

In addition, consider a light yet warm sleeping bag, trekking poles to support your knees, and a couple of thin and thick socks. Make sure the weight distribution is proper; you pack smartly rather than stuffing with those that you might not need during the classic trekking to Annapurna. Though you may hire porters to carry these gears and equipment for you, there are limitations on how much they can carry at once, which is not more than 25 kg shared between two trekkers.

Annapurna Classic Trek - 19 Days Itinerary

Day 01:

Arrive in Kathmandu

Upon landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), you will be welcomed by our airport representative, who will also transfer you to your hotel. There is a briefing session in the evening when you will receive an insight about your upcoming itinerary for an Annapurna Classic Trekking over a welcome dinner. For the rest of the day, you can take a rest or stroll around the Kathmandu Valley for better acclimatization to the Himalayan air of Nepal.

Day 02:

Drive to Besisahar (760m), then take a jeep to Jagat (1,300m)

The journey to the Annapurna Classic Trekking Trail officially begins today with a drive from Kathmandu to Besishar and then a jeep to Jagat. The drive is adventurous and joyous, passing through typical mountain villages, roaring rivers, and lush hills with a glimpse into the rural Nepali lifestyle, and calling it a day at one of the teahouses in Jagat.

Day 03:

Jagat (1,300m) to Dharapani (1,860m)

Jagat is the typical Annapurna Trek starting point to begin walking that includes traversing through typical mountain villages one more time, crossing several suspension bridges, and a mix of ascents and descents through dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, especially vibrant in the months of spring from March to May. The walk continues until you reach a valley to begin the last section of the day’s trekking through the village of Kodo before a final ascent to Dharapani.

Day 04:

Dharapani (1,860m) to Chame (2,670m)

The Annapurna Classic Trek continues and passes through the villages of Bagarchap and Koto, dotted in between dense forests of oak, fir, pine, and maple trees. The snow-capped majesty of Annapurna and Lamjung Himal adds much to the scenery. The Tibetan houses, Buddhist monasteries, Gompas, and Mani walls showcase strong cultural ties, further enhancing the experience before concluding the day at Chame.

Day 05:

Chame to Pisang (3,200m)

Pisang is your destination of the day at an elevation of 3,300 m above sea level, where you can sense the change in air when you are greeted with more and more expansive views of the surrounding Himalayas as you move back and forth through lush forests and varying yet scenically abundant landscapes. In the villages of Bhratang, Dhikur Pokhari, and Humde, the cultural immersion is profound, eventually leading you to Pisang for the night.

Day 06:

Pisang to Manang (3,540m)

Now you will leave Pisang behind and head to yet another popular village on the way to the Annapurna Circuit Trek called Manang. Covering around 16 km in 5-6 hours, the scenes are as if the piece of heaven that will slowly lead you to your dream destination passes through villages dominated by Tibetan Buddhist communities such as Ghyaru, Ngawal, and Mungji. On the way, you may visit Barge Monastery and call it a day in Manang.
Day 07:

Manang – Rest

Starting the trek from Jagat at an elevation of 1,300 m/4,265 ft, on reaching an altitude of 3,519 m above sea level in Manang, the altitude gain even by now is significant; that is, before you proceed further, it is a must that your body is well adjusted to high altitude with a comparatively low level of oxygen. You may take ample rest as much as you want, best if you hike up and sleep low, and explore the village and surrounding area rich in ancient cultural heritage.

Day 08:

Manang to Yak Kharka (4,050m)

As usual, after an acclimatization day in Manang, the day begins earlier, and the journey to take a round trip of one of the high mountain passes in the world, Thorong La Pass, continues. The trail first ascends to the village of Tenki and gradually to Marshyangdi Valley, eventually to Jarsang Khola. The streams, the village of Gunsang, Mani Walls, and lastly meadows near Yak Kharka add much to the scenery. One key point to not forget and follow is “Slow and steady wins the race”.

Day 09:

Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,525m)

Hold your breath. The destination of the day is none other than the base of the mighty Thorong La Pass. Expect a mix of steep ascending and descending trails demanding a good level of physical fitness and resilience. However, you will not regret it a bit, with the crispy air marking your closeness to the mighty mountain ranges in serenity.

Day 10:

Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (Thorong-La pass)

The day is finally here when you will reach your prime destination, Thorong La Pass, which connects Manang to one of the highly revered Muktinath Areas treasured by both Hindus and Buddhists. You will begin ascending before the cockpit so you can avoid the Himalayan afternoon warth and take ample photographs amidst the snow-capped peaks and trails bathed in snow.

Day 11:

Muktinath (3,800m) to Marpha Village (2,670m)

As you are in Muktinath, you will miss out on visiting the sacred temple of Hindu lord Vishnu, which Buddhists also treasure as the manifestation of Avalokiteśvara, the place of liberation. Take a blessing early in the morning or at least soak in the serene atmosphere and begin descending. The steep and barren hillside, like those in deserts, entirely different from what you saw while ascending, keeps you entertained until you arrive in Marpha.

Day 12:

Marpha (2,670m) to Ghasa (2,010m)

The descending trail continues from Marpha along the Kali Gandaki River featuring barren landscapes resembling the Tibetan plateau that slowly appears to fade as you get closer to the last Thakali village of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, Ghasa. You will be delighted as the trekking route opens its way to forests of pine, rhododendron, and birch, and savor apple products as a snack to keep you energized.

Day 13:

Ghasa (2,010m) to Tatopani (1,200m)

Now you will be walking in warmer climatic zones with the decreasing altitude, and the destination of the day is Tatopani, famous for its natural hot spring. In between, expect to come across Rupse Chhahare (Rupse Waterfall), numerous traditional villages, and dense forests with pleasing air providing a much-needed break from high-altitude ascents.

Day 14:

Tatopani – Rest or trek to Sikha

It's time to take a rejuvenating bath in a natural hot spring. Take in all the beauty of the surrounding hills and Himalayas, or you can also choose to trek uphill to Sikha, one of the hidden gems of the Annapurna Himalayas, featuring unspoiled Magar culture, traditions, and way of life. 3-4 hours of hiking is worth it as you stand amidst the serene natural beauty.

Day 15:

Tatopani/Sikha to Ghorepani (2,850m)

As usual, today’s trek also begins after breakfast at the lodge, and then you will slowly pursue the steeply ascending trail passing through villages with terraced farms until you arrive at Ghorepani, featuring vibrant rhododendron forests and stunning mountain views.

Day 16:

Ghorepani to Tikhedhunga

You are almost at the end of the Annapurna Classic Trek as you descend to Tikhedhunga. Before that, you will not miss out on the otherworldly sunrise view from Poon Hill (3,210 m) over Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). The trails are comparatively easier than the one you ascended before.

Day 17:

Tikhedhunga to Nayapul (1,070m) then drive to Pokhara

The 17th day is a mix of trekking and driving, which includes hiking up to Nayapul from Tihedhunga, and passing through Birethanti. The walk is through charming villages, terraced farms, and lush forests, keeping you refreshed, followed by a joyous drive back to Pokhara, and engaging in various outdoor adventures like boating, paragliding, kayaking, and more.

Day 18:

Pokhara to Kathmandu drive in a tourist bus

Based on the 19 days Annapurna Classic Trek itinerary from Skybound Adventure, you will return to Kathmandu on this day in a tourist bus. The drive is one more through the Prithivi Highway, first along the Marshyangdi River and then Trishuli, marking your closeness to the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu.

Day 19:

Final departure

The Annapurna Classic Trip concludes this day. You may choose to extend your holidays in Nepal with a shorter hike to Langtang Valley and Nagarkot Day Hike; otherwise, it is the day when you will depart to your next destination or home country as per your preferences. Regardless, we will drop you off at the terminal gate of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) three hours before the scheduled flight. Wishing you a safe journey ahead!

Essential Information

When is the best time to go classic trekking to Annapurna?

Spring and autumn in Nepal from March to May and autumn from September to November are taken as the shoulder seasons for high-altitude climbing, hiking, and trekking, such as the Everest Base Camp Hike, Everest Three Passes Trek, and Annapurna Base Camp Trek, including for the Himalayan Odyssey to take a round trip of the 10th highest mountain in the world, Mount Annapurna (8,091 m) above sea level via crossing one of the highest mountain passes on the earth, Thorong La Pass (5,416 m).

These months of the year feature ideal weather, including mild temperatures, excellent visibility, and dry trekking trails. Further, if packed trekking gear and equipment are accordingly provided with proper mental and physical preparation followed by companionship from local experts like Skybound Adventures, summer and winter Annapurna Classic Trekking is also conquerable.

What are the permits required for Annapurna Classic Trekking in Nepal?

For the Annapurna Classic Trek, also known as the Classic Annapurna Circuit Hiking, trekkers will need two permits specifically called the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) Card and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) that are issued by tourism bodies of Nepal like the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) through licensed trek, tour, and expedition organizers like Skybound Adventure. These are here to record your visit while the fee generated from these permits provides trekkers help in need, maintains the condition of trekking trails, and side by side upgrades the living standard of locals from the Himalayas.

Is Annapurna Classic Trek difficult to complete?

The classic Annapurna Hiking in the Annapurna Himalayas of Nepal that reaches the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) to encircle Mount Annapurna (8,091 m) overall is taken as a moderate to challenging Himalayan trip offering mixed terrain that is physically demanding, so it is rewarding. Trekking for almost two weeks traversing through diverse terrain, from lush subtropical forests to alpine meadows, including jaunting through steep ascents, thin air, and unpredictable weather conditions, demands a good level of physical and mental endurance and resilience. With proper training and preparation, the Annapurna Classic Trek is fruitful even to beginners, while prior trekking experience does not go to waste.

What are food and accommodation like during the Annapurna Classic Trip, Thorong La Pass (5,416m)?

Food and accommodation along the Annapurna Classic Trekking routes are provided by teahouses, lodges, and guest houses opened and managed by Himalayan locals. Though the option might get limited with increased elevation and remoteness devoid of modern facilities, they ensure you have a comfortable stay and a filled stomach. Generally, local Nepali meals such as Dal-Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), Tibetan bread, momos, and noodles are common on the menu, while in the lower elevations such as Besisahar, Chame, and Manang, you may find continental dishes like pasta and pancakes and other western dishes as well.

As for accommodation, expect simple rooms on a shared basis with twin beds and bedding, including mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Toilets and bathrooms are also common, usually located outside of the teahouse.

Must you hire guides and porters for this classic trip to Annapurna?

While legally not mandatory, hiring guides and porters for the Annapurna Classic Trip is highly recommended for a safer, enjoyable, and enhanced experience. A licensed guide from government-authorized travel, trekking, and tour agencies like Skybound Adventure navigates the difficult terrain for you, acts as a cultural and linguistic bridge between you and locals, and also allows logistical ease so all you are left to do is make the most of your journey.

Though the primary purpose of porters is to lighten your load, they are also a great help in case of emergencies. Additionally, being with local guides and porters is a way to support the local economy, while solo trekking now inside the national parks, conservation areas, and restricted areas means at least being with high-altitude trained professional guides like those from Mountain Monarch since April 1st, 2023, including for the Annapurna Circuit Trek.
