Namche Bazaar – rest day (Everest viewpoint hiking)
The altitude gain, beginning from approximately 1,400m and reaching 3,440 m, is significant, and before you approach greater heights, it is a must that you be well acclimatized. Early in the morning, you will hike for two hours to reach the Everest Viewpoint Hotel, a breathtaking view of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse, and later on, stroll around Namche Bazaar.
Namche to Tengboche (3,860m)

Chhukung – Rest Day (Chhukung-Ri hiking (5,550 m)
As you are close to one of your primary destinations, it is your much-needed acclimatization/rest day. Spending a memorable time here, you return to Chhukung Village to rest and gain energy for tomorrow.
Chhukung (4,730m) to Lobuche via Kongma-La pass ( 5,535 m)
The main goal of the day is to cross the Kong Ma La pass and reach Loubuche. On the way, expect uneven terrain with variations in elevation and steep slopes, and rocky outcrops. Be extra careful so you don't step on a loose rock. Lobuche to Gorak Shep (EBC hiking after taking our lunch)

Relishing a close view of Mount Everest without summiting the peak itself, you will catch breakfast in Gorak Shep and slowly descend toward Dzongla and stay there tonight, which is about a 6-7 hour walk in total.
Dzongla to Thangnak/Dragnak via Chola pass (5,420m)
Most of the walk of this day is ascending through steep and icy hills, which is quite challenging and adventurous, but worth it. As you climb higher, you will see a glacier finally reaching the Cho La Pass, offering awe-inspiring mountain views of Ama Dablam and Cholatse. After enjoying the views for a while from the top of the pass, you will descend to call it a day at the glacial village of Thagnak.
Thangnak to Gokyo (4,750m)

After going through some rocky and icy trails, you will reach magical Gokyo Lake, which is surrounded by majestic snowy peaks, and then gradually to beautiful Gokyo village, where you will be staying and resting tonight.
Gokyo – Rest Day (Gokyo-Ri Hiking)
Today you will hike early in the morning as usual towards Gokyo Ri, which is 2-3 hours from Gokyo Valley, rewarding you with an unforgettable sunrise view over the four highest mountains in Nepal—Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. After spending time there clicking photos, you head back to Gokyo, where you will be relaxing beside the lake, or if you have the energy, you can explore the lakes and surroundings.
Gokyo to Lumde/Lungden (Renjo-La pass)
On this day, you will cross yet another Everest Three Passes that begins with a walk toward the northern side of Gokyo Lake, ascending up toward the pass, where the trail becomes rugged terrain, but as you reach the top of Renjo La, the hardship gives you the sweet fruit of epic Himalayan views, like Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, with Gokyo Lakes below.
After spending some unforgettable moments in Renjo La Pass, you will then descend through a steep trail to the Bhote Koshi, where the path is narrow and rocky. Regardless, it is a memorable day that at last takes you to the village of Lumde.
Lumde/Lungden (4,380m) to Thame (3,800m)
A day in Lumde means the ascending part of the Everest Three Passes Hiking is now over, and begins an easier trail following a route that connects Tibet and Nepal. Though it spans quite a long time, it is descending gradually through rocky landscapes and peaceful alpine scenery, passing the small Sherpa settlement and stone walls.
The level of oxygen also increases, making it comfortable to walk for a long time and stop at Thame, a beautiful village that is also the hometown of some of the renowned legendary climbers. On reaching there, you may choose to rest, or if you still have some energy left, you can explore the monastery nearby.
Thame (3,800m) to Namche (3,440m)

With an early morning breakfast, you will descend along the bank of the Bhote Koshi River, Sherpa villages, and lush forests, calling it a day at Namche Bazaar. In here, you may celebrate the success of your journey and treat yourself to tasty bakery items with your team.
Namche to Lukla (2,860m)
The descending trekking trails of Everest Three Passes continue, and you are to reach Lukla for the night through the familiar pine forests, passing via small villages like Phakding and Monjo. The adrenaline rush of crossing the suspension bridges along the Dudh Koshi River, enjoying riverside views, and following a relatively easier trail, it is just perfect for celebrating your last day in the Himalayan region.

It is your last day in the stunning Everest Himalayas of Nepal; capture all that you can before you leave for the Kathmandu Valley with a 15 to 20-minute scenic and adventurous flight from Lukla at first to Manthali and then a drive of about 5 hours. Essential Information
What is the best time to trek Everest's three passes?
The best time to visit Everest's three passes—high passes—is during two seasons: pre-monsoon (spring season) and post-monsoon (autumn season). These times of the year provide the best view, suitable temperature, and stable weather, making the Everest Three Passes Trekking trail safer. The temperature is warm, the days are longer, and the skies are clear, which will offer you some of the beautiful views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks, while the blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers add color to the routes in spring. Both of these seasons are free from heavy snow, featuring less challenging risks; hence, they are taken as peak trek seasons in Nepal, including for the Everest Three High Passes Hiking. A dust- and haze-free atmosphere followed by clear skies results in incredibly sharp views, lower chances of slips, and mostly dry hiking routes. No wonder it is the optimal time for beginners to set out for an unmatchable Himalayan odyssey.
What kind of accommodation and food can you expect in the Everest Three High Passes trekking route?
The accommodation during the Everest Three Passes trek depends on what altitude you are staying at, as it can go from comfortable to basic and rustic as you go to higher altitudes. In general, they are provided by tea houses, basic lodges, and guesthouses to expect comfortable, even private, rooms in larger villages at low altitudes like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazar. Otherwise, there are rooms with twin beds and simple bedding, so you may have to carry extra sleeping bags. Hot meals are served in the communal dining area, and modern amenities, along with other services and choices, can be limited with an increase in altitude. Basically, you will mostly be staying in tea houses run by a family where you will get a bed with a blanket and warm meals, which are simple yet satisfying.
Weather is unpredictable during your trek, which makes your trek more challenging, so you must be prepared for minimal but reliable foods served that at times can be limited to dal bhat, thukpa, and fried rice, which are simple yet energy-giving foods that you will need during your trek and are due to the difficulty of transporting supplies, initiating a more raw experience of high-altitude trekking in Nepal. At Skybound Adventure, we do our best to meet the needs, requirements, and preferences of our clients. Our years of expertise in the field of tourism give us an edge in offering unparalleled services at an affordable cost.
Do you need permits for the Everest Three High Passes trek in Nepal?
Yes, you will need several permits for legal entry into the Everest Trekking Region, where the Everest Three High Passes Hike also takes place. You will need a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality entry permit instead of the standard Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card. The first permit, Sagarmatha National Park, is needed for entering the Everest region inside the National Park premises, which is one of the country’s natural heritages recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit is to access the iconic Khumbu Valley of Nepal that features Namche Bazaar and Everest Base Camp, as well as the three passes.
These permits can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) or in Lukla or Monjo as well, and can be time-consuming. That is why, on taking our service for the Everest Three High Passes Trekking, we at Skybound arrange all the essential permits and other logistics so you have a hassle-free trekking experience like never before.
Are there any chances of altitude sickness during your trip to the Everest Three Passes?
Yes, there are high chances of experiencing altitude sickness during the Everest Three Passes—High Passes Trek. As you ascend to higher altitudes that are normally low in oxygen, in a short period, your body might fail to adapt to the changing altitude, resulting in symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and difficulty sleeping that can lead to serious and life-threatening conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) if not taken care of in time. While some of the things that you can do to lessen the symptoms are to descend down to a few meters in altitude and acclimatize there until you are fine.
Or, you can apply some simple steps that have been proven to be effective for mitigating the risks of altitude sickness completely, which are: maintain your pace, listen to your body, acclimatize well before ascending to greater altitude, stay hydrated (drink at least 4 liters of water a day), and last but not least, avoid intoxicating substances like alcohol as much as possible. In addition, consider including ginger and garlic soup in your meal, which functions as a natural remedy for altitude sickness as well. Carrying medicine like Diamox by consulting with a doctor before the trek is also a good idea. To conclude, altitude sickness is common on this trek but can be prevented if you acclimatize and do not ignore its symptoms.
Is solo trekking still an option on Everest's three passes—high passes?
Yes, trekkers wishing to go for solo trekking to the Everest Three Passes may do so, but being guided by a professional, high-altitude trained guide from reputed trekking agencies like Skybound Adventure is a must and recommended. It is due to the Nepalese government implementing a nationwide ban on solo trekking on April 1st, 2023, in all national parks, which includes the Sagarmatha National Park, for your safety while trekking at high altitudes. This decision was made because of a series of incidents where trekkers were unprepared or lacked guidance, often having to abort the journey in mid. The unpredictable weather and difficult trails make it essential for trekkers to hire a guide. Additionally, while you are doing a trek like Everest's three passes—high passes, you trek over 5000 meters where the risk of altitude sickness grows—having a guide not only meets the requirement but also gives you support.
